Polish Heritage Society Scholarships 2025

On May 4, 2025, the Polish Heritage Society of Philadelphia (PHSP) distributed this year's Scholarship Awards at a luncheon after Mass at the Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown, PA. Funds for these scholarships are raised by the Society at various functions. This year there was a sizeable bequest was made by the family of Joseph Zazyczny, former Councilman in the City of Philadelphia, in his memory.
Dr. Teresa Wojcik, announced the scholarship recipients. She is a professor of Education at Villanova University and currently serves as the Chair of the Department of Education and Counseling. With Mary Kay Pieski she operates the non-profit Eagle-Orzel Educational and Cultural Exchange, Inc. which organizes summer English-language camps in Poland.
Each of the following students received a scholarship check for $1,500 dollars:
Jozef Antoniak - Fordham University, New York; Political Science
Patrick Chrzanowski - Penn State University, Mechanical Engineering
Diana Garderewicz - Arcadia University, Pennsylvania; pre-medical program
Alexander Gray - University of Kentucky, pre-medical program
Mikolaj Kastelik - accepted at several colleges, Data Science
Jacob Lewis - University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Social Studies
Maximilian Lipski - Penn State University, Mechanical Engineering
Victoria Opiatowski - Penn State University, Biomedical Engineering
Kevin Purcell - Penn State University, Business Management
Mateusz Pytel - Penn State University, Global Supply Chain Management
Tyler Szajda - Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Architecture
Stanley Wolanin - University of Northern Florida, International DiplomacyEach student received a rose and the English translation of a biographical book about of Rudolf Modrzejewski (Ralph Modjeski), the chief engineer and builder of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge in Philadelphia "Czlowiek z Pogranicza Epok" by Prof. Jozef Glomb. Each book held a bookmark that listed the accomplishments of the first Polish colonists at Jamestown Virginia, including their successful protest in 1619 which resulted in them getting full voting rights in the management of this English colony.
